When Should I Remove a Device from My Dashboard?
Meraki devices must be claimed and added to a network in the dashboard in order to be monitored and configured. Once a device has been added to a user’s dashboard, it cannot be added to any other user’s dashboard until the original user “un-claims” it. As a result, removing/un-claiming a device from your dashboard is necessary if you need to move it to a different organization or if you are looking to resell the device during an upgrade cycle.
1. Locating the device that needs to be removed
After logging into the Meraki Dashboard, hover over Organization on the right hand side of the screen, and select Inventory. Once on the Inventory screen, find the device that needs to be removed, and determine what network it is in. Ensure the network selected in the top left portion of the screen matches the network that the device is in.
2. Removing the device from the network
Now that we have properly selected the Network that this device is in, it is time to remove it from the Network. The device must be removed from the Network it is in before it can be unclaimed. Depending on what device you are removing, this step will vary. For Access Points, like the example we are using here, you will hover over Wireless on the left hand side of the screen and select Access Points.
Note: If we were removing a switch, you would select Switching on the left hand side of the screen and then Switches.
Now, from the Access Points screen, check the device that needs to be removed and click Remove.
3. Unclaiming the Device from Your Inventory
Now that the device has been removed from any Network it was in, it is now time to unclaim the device from your inventory. First, hover over Organization on the left hand side of the screen and select Inventory. Once on the Inventory screen, check the device that needs to be unclaimed and select Unclaim. Now the device is unclaimed from your inventory and is ready to be added to a different Meraki dashboard.
